De Belgische Kusttram, van de Nederlandse tot de Franse grens, verbindt bewoners en bezoekers van de kust. Rond de lijn ontvouwt zich een weefsel van toerisme, oud‑koloniaal kapitaal en nieuw geld, strand en haven.
De kust draagt de sporen van frontlinies uit twee wereldoorlogen, hoogtijdagen en crises—en in het dagelijkse leven rondom de tram is die gelaagde geschiedenis voelbaar.
Binnen loopafstand van de tramlijn heb ik, intuïtief en vanuit een objectiverend standpunt, verbanden vastgelegd: momenten waarin de tram niet alleen mensen, maar ook tijd, plaats en belangen verbindt. Geen enscenering—wel standpunt, licht en ritme om orde in de hectiek te brengen, zodat zichtbaar wordt hoe de Kusttram de kust heeft hertekend en vormgegeven.
The Belgian Coast Tram, running from the Dutch to the French border, connects the residents and visitors of the shoreline. Along its route unfolds a fabric of tourism, colonial legacies and new money, beach and harbour. The coast bears a rich history: front lines of two world wars, boom years, and no shortage of crises.
It is a shore populated by tourists, retirees, and people who live from what the sea provides. The tramway has redrawn and shaped the coast, and in the everyday life around it, history and development are tangible everywhere.
Within walking distance of the line, guided by intuition and from an objective vantage point, I have traced the connections the tram brings into being.
